Universal Audio Apollo

Ok people, please read FAQ BEFORE you email, call, text, bluetooth, Facebook, IM, Gchat or however else you managed to contact me. I appreciate your trust but I cannot handle the volume of inquiry I've gotten about this since NAMM.
Thanks SO much.

1/ Yes, the recording you hear on the UA video is all Apollo, with the help of a UA 4-710 mic pre. The set up was as follows: Kick, snare, bass, wurly on the Apollo preamps and converters. Overheads, percussion on the 4-710 preamps and Apollo converter. The vocal was then overdubbed in the same room using a large diaphragm converter thru the Apollo preamp and converters. All of it was tracked flat except the wurly which was distorted using the ep34 plugin in real time on the way in. No external FX or outboard was used.

NO it's not doctored/soupedup/tracked on a console or anything like that. What you see is what you hear except the for one pass of overdubbed vocals. (There was mostly drums in the vocal mic pass we got during the all live take so we chose to OD a quick vocal take)

No you can;t have the session (Yet). I am clearing that with all parties involved now.

2/ It was mixed quickly on my laptop using only the Apollo and a pair of Focal CMS65s. I adjusted the mix a few days later to lighten up the bottom using a pair of HD600s (I don't know the 65s very well and I went too far on them)

3/ Yes I like it. I would never associate my name with something I do not think is fantastic.

4/ Yes it works great. No I did not have any problems other than the normal alpha software oddity. Whatever concerns I had were addressed between the tracking date (Dec 20th 2011) and the first day of the NAMM show Jan 20something 2012 which is pretty rad.

5/ Yes it works with Protools. Really well. PT9 or 10 only obviously. NO headaches. The low latency mode is really smooth with PT10.

6/ Yes the converters are really good. No, I don't know how they compare to Symphony/RME/Avid/Maudio/Prism converters. I would need to setup A/B sessions and I don't have the time nor desire to do so.
I know they compared very favorably in empirical tests my venerable Lynx Auroras. That says a lot.

7/ The singer's name is Liza Colby. YEs, it's a single take top to bottom.

8/ NO I did not try the thunderbolt option. I saw a preliminary version work but I did not use it myself. It's to be released this summer. I do not know how much it will be.

9/ No I cannot get you a free unit, deal on a unit, advance unit or anything like that. I recommend talking to someone at Sweetwater.com if you want to buy one. I am not a dealer for equipment, i Make records and sometimes I shoot geeky tutorials on how to make records.

10/ Prices are about 2K for a duo, and $2500 for a quad. I would definitely go for the quad. You will use that DSP. YOu can find all this information on the UA site, you know?

11/ It comes with the basic set of plugs that every UAD box comes with. Yes you can buy more. Yes it takes the very same plugs as your UAD card. Yes if you own UAD plugs you can authorize them on the Apollo without having to pay for them again.

12/ No I'm not going to dump my PT TDM rig. The Apollo is an amazing piece but it's not going to allow me to track 32 channels of live music or mix thru 16 channels of Neve console with extra sends to vintage reverbs and stuff like that. It's the perfect piece to replace an aging 8 channel interface though. It's the great great editing rig, travelling rig, Additional rig interface we've been waiting for. Yes, there will be one at FLUX. Probably in the revolution room.

13/ Yes, it'll work great with your Dangerous D-Box. It's actually the best fit for a D_Box of any 8 channel interfaces I've seen so far.

14/ For the rest: http://www.uaudio.com/interfaces/apollo.html

I'll add more as it gets asked.

Thanks again

Fab

ABOUT MOI

I make records.
As a writer, producer and mixer I travel the world in pursuit of what makes music great, the rest of time I hang out in New York City.
Over the last few years I have worked on tracks for/with/featuring: Queen Latifah, Jennifer Lopez, DJ Colette, Isaac Hayes, Lucy Woodward, Shakira, Santigold, Mark Ronson, Les Nubians, Musiq Soulchild, Toots And The Maytals, Bon Jovi, Marc Anthony, Sean Lennon, John Travolta, Rick Margitza, MAM, Kirk Whalum, Babyface, Brazilian Girls, Nat King Cole, Bebel Gilberto and a bunch of lesser known but nonetheless extremely talented artists.
The fairies of the Grammy Awards have had the good grace of smiling on my crib three times so far, once in 2004 with a win for the Toots and The Maytals 'Duets' album, and two nominations in 2011 for the Kirk Whalum 'Everything' album featuring Musiq Soulchild. I have also had the great pleasure to produce and mix the 4 times SAMA nominated 'Radio Africa' for Freshlyground.
Otherwise I own FLUX Studios and pureMix Online.
I do read all my email but it can take a minute or two before I'm able to answer.
